The 2005 box set For Lovers: Chet Baker/John Coltrane/Stan Getz brings together all three of the Verve For Lovers compilations into one bargain-priced anthology. While these collections are by no means definitive, career-spanning representations of each artist's recorded output, they are superb single-disc productions perfectly suited for relaxing and romantic afterglow situations. While all three of these musicians could play swinging, uptempo jazz, they were also all universally acclaimed ballad players. As both a trumpeter and singer, Baker (a West Coast cool jazz icon) was especially well suited to playing warm lyrical ballads such as "You're Mine, You" and "The Touch of Your Lips," both included here. Similarly, Baker's saxophonist counterpart Getz had perhaps his biggest commercial success with his laid-back take on the Brazilian bossa nova songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, many of which are also featured here. Although primarily remembered for his outre sheets-of-sound period of the late '60s, Coltrane was an adept balladeer with a full-bodied saxophone tone and a commanding sense of harmony, traits he employs here on such standards as "After the Rain" and "They Say It's Wonderful," from his classic 1963 album John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. Also included in this set are such well-loved cuts as Baker's "Everything Happens to Me" and "Easy Living," Getz's orchestral theme to the movie Alfie and "If Ever Would I Leave You, and Coltrane's "In a Sentimental Mood" and "Soul Eyes." Ultimately, while die-hard fans will want to seek out the original albums these tracks were culled from, casual listeners in the mood for some stylish, urbane, and classic romantic jazz can't go wrong with For Lovers. ~ Matt Collar
