Eric's Trip: Chris Thompson, Rick White (guitar, vocals); Julie Doiron Claytor (bass, vocals); Mark Gaudet (drums).
Recorded at CMS, New Brunswick, Canada.
Eric's Trip literally wear one of their major influences on their CD sleeves. The band's name is most appropriately lifted from a song on Sonic Youth's DAYDREAM NATION. And on PURPLE BLUE, their 20-something release in six years, the Canadian quartet sounds more sonic than ever. In addition to liberally appropriating from the presage New York avante-punk outfit, Eric's Trip play everything from trippy, Sebadoh-like warblings and straightahead punk rock, to ambient noise-scapes and lo-fi melodic pop.
PURPLE BLUE opens with an eight-minute, ever-metamorphisizing "Introduction Into The... (Parts 1-4)," which acts as a harbringer of things to come. This veritable fugue shifts between ambient noise, lo-fi ukelele wallow, sparse pop ambiance, percussive echo-y melodicism, and overdriven apocalyptic rumblings...and that's just the first tune! Throw in the alternating boy/girl lead vocals by bassist Julie Doiron and guitarist Rick White and their diverse approaches to songwriting and production, and its as if you're listening to a compilation record. Stand-outs include the punky rave-up "Eyes Shut," the gorgeous tension-filled ballad "Soon Coming Closer," and the hard/soft pop dynamic of "Sixteen Hours" that ends with a surprisingly enticing rhythm-diminishing instrumental coda.
