This first solo album by harpist, keyboardist, and vocalist Maire Brennan swims in similar mystical waters as Celtic pop/folk colleagues Enya (Brennan's sister) and Clannad (the band Brennan has fronted since the early '70s). Evocative instrumentation, including bodhran, bouzouki, flugel horn, tin whistle, and mandolin, adds to the spectral atmosphere of MAIRE. Meanwhile, the individual songs vary in feel from lilting balladry ("I Believe [Deep Within]") to insistent, polyrhythmic tribal pulses ("Against The Wind") and are suffused with the wind-swept melancholia fans of the genre have come to expect. Crisp, well-balanced production and Brennan's soaring, ethereal vocals (backed throughout by a floating chorus comprised of three of her sisters, Enya not included) make this MAIRE a strong first effort.
