Desire is a brief but intoxicating collaboration between American psych-rock duo White Hills and Der Blutharsch and the Infinite Church of the Leading Hand, a Krautrock-worshipping Austrian group who evolved from martial industrial project Der Blutharsch. Arriving soon after White Hills' politically charged, industrial-influenced Stop Mute Defeat, this EP seems like a complete change of direction, with trippy electro-charged pop songs expressing nocturnal heartache and longing. The hazy textures and sludgy, lo-fi drum machines are closer to Not Not Fun's school of hypnagogic psychedelia than the heavier stoner metal or space rock White Hills are often known to produce. The lyrics are clear, straightforward, and emotionally weighty: "Desire, why do you burn so much?" Following the squirming, space-gliding instrumental "SFG," the EP ends with "Lover," which balances a relaxed tempo with scorching guitars and acerbic, accusatory lyrics. ~ Paul Simpson
