One of myriad projects involving Deepchord/Echospace mastermind Rod Modell, Shorelights is a trio which also includes Walter Wasacz and Chris McNamara of audio-visual collective Nospectacle. Everything about the project's work, from the visual art to the track titles to the music itself, is inspired by the Great Lakes, particularly the weather, the beaches, the adjacent forests, the wildlife, and anything else to do with nature. The first Shorelights album, Summer Cottage Soundscapes, was a single hour-long drone which electronically evoked crashing waves, buzzing insects, and storm clouds. Ancient Lights is more specific, with each of the eight track titles indicating a particular location, scene, or occurrence. The tracks themselves are all quite different, ranging from haunted ambient drifts to aquatic dub-techno exercises. "Ipperwash Beach" is a lengthy soundscape which lurches back and forth, incorporating jazzy flourishes and perhaps sounds from the animal kingdom. There are also somewhat dramatic basslines to tracks like "Lake Not Ocean" and "Late Summer Rain." Ghostly vocals are caught in the wave during "Autumn Evening," and "Fell from the Sky" feels like some sort of distant alien transmission. While much ambient dub techno, even at its best, can sound interchangeable or wallpaper-like, Modell's projects often have much more personality to them, and that is fully evident on this fantastic release. ~ Paul Simpson
