Personnel: Andre Hajj (bouzouki, oud); David Abi Atme (kanun); Raymond Nassif (violin, viola); Joseph Karam (ney); Oussama El Khatib (double bass); Raymond Hajj (percussion). Liner Note Authors: Diz Heller; Andre Hajj. Recording information: Raymond Hajj Studio, Lebanon. Translator: Raja Fallah. Though the album is labeled as specifically Lebanese, much Middle Eastern music, when played in an orchestral form, can sound strikingly similar. This is absolutely the case with Andre Hajj's debut release on ARC. His oud playing is remarkable, and the qanun from David Atme carries the album for extended periods of interest. Despite that, with the basic Middle Eastern beats and the basic tabla/darbukka drumming of Raymond Hajj, the sound becomes similar to much of the other instrumental music of the region. Though the individuality of the recording may be relatively lacking, it is a fine recording. Where many other artists tend toward the use of Middle Eastern music as a basis for fusion rather than perfecting the traditional formats, Hajj holds the music lovingly, makes it his own, then carefully places it in front of the listener. The touches of Lebanon are subtle, placed in contrast to the larger structures of maqam, but the band treats the music well. Worth a listen for interested newcomers to Middle Eastern music who want something different than contemporary bellydance. ~ Adam Greenberg

商品の紹介

Lebanon has always been a Middle Eastern crossroads, a place with its own long cultural history that's also welcomed others, and that's perfectly illustrated on this collection by a very traditional ensemble fronted by the staggering oud talents of Andre Hajj, who is to the fore throughout, as well as enjoying a couple "taqasims" or improvisations, with "Shwayyet Hobb" a particular standout. The group explores several different styles over the course of the CD, like "Al El Hayy," which skips lightly, the Turkish "Tishreen," which has a more Far Eastern flavor, and "Raheel," in the Gypsy style, where violin (perhaps unsurprisingly) predominates as the piece shifts seamlessly through many moods. It's a subtle disc, powered by some superb percussion playing that makes the complex time signatures sound natural and simple, while the other instruments offer melodic, virtuoso backing. Hajj himself is always graceful in his playing, capable of breathtaking runs and extemporization that moves logically and with great sensitivity. Anyone wanting an introduction to the varied music of Lebanon need look no further than this. ~ Chris Nickson|
