The singer-songwriter Meic Stevens' influence in his native Wales has been compared to both Bob Dylan's in the U.S. and Serge Gainsbourg's in France. First released in 1970, Stevens' only English-language album (he usually sings in Welsh, a language that in previous generations had been driven underground by the English authorities) is an intriguing blend of psychedelia, jazz-rock, and folk influences, bound together by the singer's unique voice and songs that cover lovelorn ballads, such as "Love Owed" and "The Sailor and Madonna," as well as the more protest-oriented "Ghost Town" and "Where Have All My People Gone."
