英国バロックのみならず、音楽史上の金字塔オペラのひとつ、パーセルの「ディドーとエネアス」。17世紀英国の劇場の活気と喧騒、当時の人々を驚かせたであろう美しい旋律など、ヤーコプスの演奏の見事さにはあらためて圧倒されます。歌手陣も皆演技も巧みな立ち回りです。大詰めで瀕死のディドーが歌う嘆きのアリア『私が土の中に横たえられる時』はこの曲の白眉ですが、リン・ドーソンは情感に流されることなく、切々と訴えかけてきます。ドーソンを支えるヤーコプスの通奏低音の音作りも、歌を邪魔することは決してありませんが、色彩豊か。色褪せることのない不朽の名演です。
