Charles Mingus is one of the greatest composers and bandleaders in the history of jazz. In the 1950s, Mingus was among the first jazz musicians to start his own record company, called Debut. This 12-CD set includes all the music Mingus recorded for Debut, both as a leader and an accompanist. The cast of players reads as a who's who of modern jazz: Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Elvin, Hank and Thad Jones, Max Roach, Paul Bley and Dizzy Gillespie, as well as the lesser-known Teddy Charles, Jackie Paris and John Dennis.
The selections span a variety of styles and moods, but are unified by a sense of freedom of expression. Since this was a musician-owned label, the group was free of major-label pressures to come up with "hits"-so listeners hear what the players wanted to be heard. Some tunes are more relaxed jazz--"mainstream" by contemporary standards--and some tunes, such as the Sun Ra-like "Untitled Original Composition" on disc 12, are more "exotic" and experimental. For lovers of Mingus' work and the jazz styles of the 1950s, COMPLETE DEBUT RECORDINGS is a hefty yet essential purchase.
