Recorded live for the classic TV series Austin City Limits, this disc captures the 1981 reunion of the Sir Douglas Quintet. While Doug Sahm played with many of the Quintet's key members throughout his career (most notably, ace keyboardist Auggie Meyers), he was always at his most jovial when playing under the Quintet moniker, and this rollicking performance proves no exception. Falling into a ragged yet irresistible groove, the band runs through back-catalog garage-rockers ("Mendicino" and "She's About A Mover"), country tunes ("Is Anybody Goin' To San Antone"), and requisite Tex-Mex numbers ("Ya No Llores/Chicano"). As this wonderful performance shows, Sahm encompasses the whole of Texas music, and at the heart of that sound is, naturally, soul. Because, to paraphrase the Quintet's song "Crossroads" (performed here), you just can't live in Texas if you don't have a lot of it.
