Cherry isn't the much-anticipated sequel to Chromatics' widely acclaimed 2012 album Kill for Love, but it offers a wealth of material in the same line as that album (and its predecessor, Night Drive), and is more than enough to satisfy fans waiting for the long-promised Dear Tommy. "Cherry" was originally released on the 2013 compilation After Dark 2, and it's easily one of the group's best songs, bar none. The Cherry EP first appeared in 2016, and other than the majestic title track and its non-disco version ("I Can't Keep Running"), highlights include the group's fantastic cover of Joy Division's "Ceremony" (featuring Glass Candy vocalist Ida No) and the simple, direct synth pop tune "At Your Door." The original Cherry EP is excellent in its own right, but a deluxe edition was issued in 2017, expanding it into a full album, containing tracks from Chromatics' Lady and Just Like You EPs as well as other miscellaneous material. The group's cover of Dark Day's minimal synth classic "Hands in the Dark" (previously heard on the first After Dark compilation) sounds as haunting, mysterious, and lovely as ever, while the extended 15-minute disco version of "Looking for Love" is a monumental bliss-out. Chromatics' discography contains numerous EPs, alternate versions, limited releases, and other ephemera, making it hard to navigate for less committed fans, but Cherry is every bit as worthwhile as their proper albums. ~ Paul Simpson
