Originally issued as a double LP, SATCHMO AT SYMPHONY HALL documents one of the early appearances of Armstrong's soon-to-be-famous All-Star group at Boston's Symphony Hall in 1947. The album is distinguished by the program's concentration on such classics as "Mahogany Hall Stomp," "Black And Blue," "Muskrat Ramble" and "C-Jam Blues." Satch's vocals take a back seat as his rich, golden trumpet tone dominates to such a degree that the listener can almost undergo a delicious time-warp to the days of his Hot Fives and Sevens.
The only two numbers that feature Armstrong on the mic, "On The Sunny Side Of The Street" and "Black And Blue," are tremendous crowd-pleasers. SATCHMO AT SYMPHONY HALL finds Armstrong at home with his new five-piece New Orleans-style ensemble and triumphantly signals the maestro's return to the music of his youth.
