FAITHLESS is a collection of songs recorded in the late '70s, between the "sweet" Marianne era of the early '60s and the harder, "seen-it-all" Marianne of her following album, the remarkable comeback, BROKEN ENGLISH. FAITHLESS was recorded after years of Marianne being missing in action, a time of torment, despair, and isolation. It was a complete change of direction. Some of the songs are lushly produced ballads (the exceptional "Dreamin' My Dreams"), others toy with disco ("Vanilla O'Lay"), while a few (particularly Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight") indicate the ragged vocal power and expressive interpretive talent which would become evident in the future. A majority of tracks are Nashville-inspired. Faithfull effectively sings "It Wasn't God That Made Honky Tonk Angels" and performs an excellent, moody, somber interpretation of the simple "I'm Not Lisa," giving it a dimension never held before. The two best cuts are originals--the country ballad "That Was The Day (Nashville)" and "Lady Madelaine"--proof that her own muses and demons were also her most potent musical attributes. FAITHLESS is a bouncy, meticulously produced album of country and pop, an undemanding sound Marianne quickly turned from. Yet for true fans, FAITHLESS provides an interesting insight and historical perspective into the transitional post-"lost years" of Marianne Faithfull.
