When Lacuna Coil issued the brilliant Delirium in 2016, it served as an ending and a new beginning. After foundational personnel changes, they recorded it as a quartet with new drummer Ryan Folden joining the ranks and bassist/composer Marco Coti Zelati handling most of the guitar and synth chores. He also enlisted a host of A-list guest shredders for solos, then recruited Diego Cavallotti for the tour. Delirium closed the door on nearly 20 years of history, which got the band to thinking how they might best document it. The end result is wonderfully presented on Presence of the Past, a strictly limited-edition box containing 13 discs comprised of their entire studio catalog and select bonus material. Notable inclusions are disc five -- which is a reissue of the second disc from the deluxe edition of Comalies -- which has acoustic versions of album tracks and radio-edited mixes for singles "Heaven's a Lie" and "Swamped." Disc seven is the entire, scorching Live at Wacken gig, while disc nine is the bonus volume for the deluxe edition of Shallow Life and includes four extra studio tracks, three played acoustically for radio broadcasts, a handful of performances from a House of Blues gig in 2009, and three from a St. Petersburg, Florida show in 2006. The 13th and final volume is titled "Rarities & B-Sides"; it includes some real curios such as a Jack Dangers mix of "Our Truth," the previously unissued "Without a Reason," the acoustic "Closer," other remixes -- including an unnecessary three for "I Like It" -- and a trio of B-sides. The box is packaged with a large booklet containing full lyrics, color and black-and-white photos, and lengthy liner essays. Presence of the Past is more than a summation in and of itself, it is also a precursor to Lacuna Coil's forthcoming lavishly illustrated autobiography Nothing Stands in Our Way. This box is designed (as is the book) for the unwavering faithful who've followed the band doggedly through their various style and personnel changes as they rose from Italian upstarts to metal icons. ~ Thom Jurek
