Julian Cope's fourth solo album, MY NATION UNDERGROUND, along with its predecessor form an odd pair in his catalogue. Charting a less obviously "strange" course through the world of pop music than his other albums, lyrically they both seem to show Cope uneasy with his then- star status while musically, they incorporate more standard elements--though nothing about what Cope does is really "standard." That said, MY NATION UNDERGROUND also clearly points the way toward the next phase of his career as a whacked-out visionary and pop-mystic (both of which are meant in the nicest possible way).
The album includes several of Cope's finest compositions, including the MTV hit "Charlotte Ann" and "China Doll." The former is a lush pop spectacle with a jittery bass line, horns, and a harpsichord and the latter shows Cope at his most romantic--against soaring strings and a sedate beat, he sings with such commitment and sincerity that you can't help but feel touched. The title track is an odd stab at funk, with a little reggae, blues, and orchestral pop tossed in for good measure. As an added bonus, the record also contains the first of what would become a Cope trademark: stream-of-conscious liner notes.
