Fresh off their second studio collaboration with comedian/actor/bluegrass aficionado Steve Martin -- 2017's excellent Long Awaited Album -- North Carolina's Grammy Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers deliver a spirited, no-frills set of homespun country-folk/bluegrass originals (a tender rendering of Bob Dylan's "Let Me Die in My Footsteps" is the sole cover) with the Joe Henry-produced Out in the Open. Quietly virtuosic, unassuming, and resonant, the 12-track set was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs. Employing an earthy blend of dirt road country, bucolic folk, and Last Waltz-inspired Americana, the band's knack for pairing pop smarts with contemporary bluegrass is evident throughout, with highlights arriving via the rousing "Let Me Out of This Town," the plaintive "Roadside Anthems," and the soulful title track, the latter of which is one of several cuts that show off the group's effortless harmonizing. ~ James Christopher Monger
