THE ESSENTIAL SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON is seminal stuff, and a virtually definitive collection of the great bluesman's tenure at Chess Records. This was a period widely conceded to be his most artistically fruitful.
He's backed by a who's who of Chicago blues musicians, in particular the astonishingly metallic sounding, almost avant-garde two guitar team of Robert Lockwood and Luther Tucker, bassist/songwriter Willie Dixon, and Muddy Waters' great pianist Otis Spann. Highlights include a dead-on imitation of Howlin' Wolf, the very funny "Little Village" (which opens with a famous foulmouthed exchange between the singer and producer Leonard Chess), and seven tunes on Disc Two that are presented in first-time stereo versions.
