Television was a band that thrived on tension. Where Tom Verlaine's guitar was jittery, Richard Lloyd's was triumphant, even anthemic. FIELD OF FIRE, which was originally released in 1985, was Lloyd's second solo album (ALCHEMY was his first, six years prior). It's a brimming mix of musical smarts. This deluxe double-CD reissue features a reworked alternate version of the 1985 set, done in 2005, with vocals as well as some instruments rerecorded, and tracks placed in a different order. Though Lloyd can certainly rock and roll, these seemingly simple songs are filled with the kinds of subtle twists and turns that recall the best work of the British guitarist Chris Spedding. Lloyd's CBGB/New York City roots are evident throughout, but the deeper roots that led to these offshoots are to be found here as well. There are traces of the Stones in the Keith Richards-like guitar approach on "Soldier Blue" and "Backtrack," and "Keep on Dancing" isn't too far removed from Lloyd's contemporaries the Ramones, although it's filled with the kinds of musical explorations quite foreign to that band. "Pleading" sounds like a lost Television song, with a sound squarely in the corner of MARQUEE MOON and ADVENTURE.
