Though he'd been lurking around the fringes of the hip-hop scene for a while, Hi-Tek first made a major splash on the underground hip-hop scene via his collaboration with Talib Kweli on REFLECTION ETERNAL. That album set a standard for progressive hip-hop that was followed by the more-successful BLACK STAR by Kweli and Mos Def, but Hi-Tek bounces back with HI-TEKNOLOGY. Kweli, Common, and a host of other underground hip-hoppers join Hi-Tek on this blast of intensity and creativity from the epicenter of modern rap. Though Hi-Tek occasionally indulges in thug-oriented imagery, he's got larger concerns on his mind. Enlightenment and transcendence are the overriding themes of "The Sun God," for example. And on "All I Need is You," he delivers an ode to romantic fealty that's emotionally light years beyond what most street-cred rappers seem capable of. The sophisticated, highly textured production is heady enough to support the most high-minded of sentiments, but still funky without resorting to jeep beats.

Entertainment Weekly (5/11/01, p.80) - "...Dazzling....Devising sound beds of PArliament-level funk and as much soul as James Brown, he's hip-hop's best-kept secret....The album's only shortcoming is its brevity." - Rating: A- Q (Summer/01, p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A hip hop album for those with liberal sensibilities....combining Timbaland-crisp beats with standard East Coast head-nodding, to pleasant enough effect..." Vibe (6/01, p.132) - 3.5 discs out of 5 - "...Mixing funk, jazz, soul and reggae instrumentation with hard beats that flow with vocals by the usual suspects....switching up for a little variety....[This] hits the high mark..." The Source (7/01, p.198) - "...The perfect showcase for his 2 strongest skills: shaping a song's mood to fit the featured rapper and creating thumping beats that somehow maintain a laid-back feel..."
