These early-1960s sessions, which comprised the Caravans' initial albums for the Vee-Jay label, were recorded after the departure of Inez Andrews. The female vocal ensemble soldiered on quite well without her, however, allowing much more time for the gospel act's matriarch, Albertina Walker, and a young Shirley Caesar to shine. Highlights of this two-for-one compilation include a simmering take on "Amazing Grace," the soulful "I'm Ready to Serve the Lord," and the bluesy "What Will Tomorrow Bring." Rounded out by Cassietta George, Dolores Washington, Josephine Howard, and pianist/organist James Herndon, the Caravans were leading lights in spiritual music of the '60s, and these 24 tracks are proof of just why.
