By and large, the world of house music, even progressive house, eschews the "star system" so prevalent in most other areas of pop culture. While their names are well known, the master practitioners of the style are far more anonymous than their peers in other musical styles. However, progressive house pioneers Sasha and John Digweed have emerged as two of the true "stars" of the genre. Following in the footsteps of their late-'90s NORTHERN EXPOSURE trilogy comes COMMUNICATE. This hefty two-disc set finds the duo utilizing samples by everyone from Eric Clapton and Sven Vath, to the Orb and the Chemical Brothers. While keeping a steady, danceable BPM rate going throughout COMMUNICATE's 22 tracks, Sasha and Digweed offer a continuously varying palate of electronic (or electronically manipulated) tonal colors. Minimalists at heart, they shift the focus gradually from one element to another, letting each new sound resonate for a while. By the end of the album, though, the listener may be surprised at the wide variety of sonic landscapes they've journeyed through without even realizing it.
