More Disco Songs About Love is the third LP from Los Angeles alternative dance duo De Lux (Sean Guerin and Isaac Franco). While their previous albums made influences such as LCD Soundsystem and Talking Heads crystal clear, here they continue to hone a more consistent sound of their own, one with an emphasis on feeling good and moving feet. That said, in true post-punk fashion, their lyrics rely on everyday life and anxieties. Here, that includes a handful of songs about music and the realities of living as a musician, such as the hyper, sardonic "Music Snob" ("Nothing impresses me right now") and the funny-'cause-it's-true "Writing Music for Money, to Write More Music." The latter takes on a syncopated, lite sophisti-pop sound that acts as a musical straight man to explicit and calmly exasperated lyrics. Elsewhere, with hand drums accentuating a funky bass groove and electronic beats, the Devo-esque "Smarter Harder Darker" features Sal P. of Liquid Liquid on vocals. Another notable guest, Mark Stewart of the Pop Group, appears on the punkier, high-drama "Stratosphere Girl." While songs and, more often, lyrical trains of thought sometimes meander, More Disco Songs About Love presents a tweaked, more streamlined sound that manages to stay well clear of sameness. ~ Marcy Donelson
