There's absolutely no indication of whence the 12 tracks on this budget-priced CD come, but the fact that "I've Got Rhythm" runs nearly five minutes, and that the title of "Three Little Words" is spoken aloud, and some numbers have applause at the end, tell us that these are postwar radio transcriptions. Whatever their origins, the tracks are pretty much all first-rate big-band jazz by one of the best bands of its kind -- Jimmy's band always had more of an edge than Tommy's, and the music here is fairly ambitious and executed with sharp playing, crisp articulation and decent-length solos. Other songs include "Shine On Harvest Moon" (with a great sax solo), "Imagination," "I'm Stepping Out With a Memory Tonight," "Moonlight on the River," "Sophisticated Swing," and a hot finish with "Just You Just Me," from the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York. The sound is extremely clean throughout, although the textures vary slightly -- "Someday Sweetheart" sounds like the singer is in some cavernous hall, while much of the rest seems to emanate from smaller clubs, or at least closer microphone placements. ~ Bruce Eder
