Percussionist/bandleader Matos and company take a dynamic voyage through the Afro-Cuban jazz-funk continuum. The tunes range from Havana rumba, bata, swingin' descargas and sounds of Nueba Yol funk and standards, up through the stratosphere with ethereal ruminations, only to touch base again in the ancestral polyrhythms of West Africa. SESSIONS represents a collage of selections from various recording projects, studded with rhythm hits to make even maestro Puente duck for cover. The combination of horn solos and rhythm section is both cerebral and booty-shakin'. A thoughtful rendition of Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan" features group vocal affirmations (Spanish, English and new world Yoruba) and sprinkles of piano commentary cradled by steady percussion and bass work. Elsewhere, the burning horn section gladly gives up the funk on three different interpretations of Herbie Hancock's fusion classic "Chameleon." SESSIONS gives the listener a sense of the great breadth of Matos' musical world.
