A1 People features the diminutive Simeon Bowring, late of the underestimated British electronica outfit Pentatonik, and he brings quite a stylistic change to this new project. A1 People forsake Pentatonik's complexity for the groovier climes of electro and soulful techno-funk. Imagine Prince and George Clinton getting down with folks like Cybotron and I-F and you'll get a good idea as to the gutbucket machine moves of A1 People.
"Son of a Gun" might, in fact, have been made by Chic in the '70s, had they listened to the sounds of Detroit rather than Brooklyn; it's all goof raps, electro hip-hop rhythms and weirdo vocoder vocal bends. "Goin' Down" uses the same fuzzbox electronics and hammerhead beatboxes so beloved by the Miami bass crew, inserting lots of good old-fashioned synth blurts, blips, and bubbles for good measure. FRESH JUICE is a decidedly funky treat, heavy on the synthetic chocolate sauce, and as slippery as the greasiest funk.|
