"Craftsmanship" isn't a word that one often hears in connection with death metal. Back in the '70s and '80s, that word was certainly applicable to Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio, and Black Sabbath -- those artists, for all their aggression, were extremely musical. But death metal has often been about brutality for the sake of brutality, which isn't to say that bands like Deicide, Carcass, and Cannibal Corpse aren't enjoyable -- they aren't terribly musical, but despite their limitations, they can be exhilarating and fun (in a sick, twisted way) if one has a taste for extreme metal. Mystifier, however, isn't your average death metal/black metal combo. Arguably Brazil's most appealing metal export since Sepultura, Mystifier brings a strong sense of craftsmanship to Profanus. This CD is brutally forceful, but it's also intricate, musical, and relatively melodic. Goth-rock-sounding keyboards are used extensively, and even though lead singer Asmodeus favors the sort of choked, demonic, larynx-shredding vocal style that death metal, black metal and grindcore are known for, he is usually understandable; more often than not, one can understand the Occult-minded lyrics that are coming out of his mouth. Profanus (which was recorded in 2001) has enough high-speed brutality to keep a mosh pit happy, but the material also shows a strong awareness of old-school fantasy metal artists like Iron Maiden, Queensryche, King Diamond, and Savatage. That isn't to say that a fantasy metal enthusiast who dislikes death metal in general will necessarily get into Profanus; however, a fantasy metal enthusiast who has a casual interest in death metal and appreciates the occasional Slayer, Sepultura, or Witchery CD may very well have an easy time getting into Mystifier. Without question, Profanus is an impressive example of the band's ability to avoid death metal's limitations. ~ Alex Henderson
