It had been four years since Karen and Richard's last album, PASSAGE, a solo album Karen had recorded in 1979 with producer Phil Ramone but unreleased until 1996. Some fans may be disappointed by the lack of the Carpenters' traditional '60s covers, as MADE IN AMERICA features a larger-than-usual number of songs written by the songwriting team of Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. None of these are less than very good; some--especially "These Old Dreams" and "Because We Are In Love"--are excellent. Although it was unfortunately to be the duo's final work, MADE IN AMERICA does the Carpenters' legacy proud.
