A Spanish indie pop outfit led by a pair of Chilean guitarists, the Zephyr Bones radiate with the intercontinental sunniness of two coasts. The lush, pillowy reverbs and winsome melodies of Secret Place, the quartet's debut, pool together in an amalgam of hazy dream pop, surf tones, and light psych textures. After crossing the Atlantic to set up shop in Barcelona, singers/guitarists Brian Silva and Jossip Tkalcic joined up with rhythm section Marc Lopez and Carlos Ramos, developing a sound they self-described as "beach wave." It's an apt enough term for the tranquil guitar pop they first offered on 2015's Wishes/Fishes EP and now expand upon with Secret Place. Arriving amid a burgeoning Spanish scene of garage- and surf-inspired indie acts like Hinds and the Parrots, the Zephyr Bones seem less concerned with the lo-fi party rock angle, focusing more on overall craftsmanship and quality arrangements. The serenity of their delivery, especially on highlights like "The Arrow of Our Youth" and the title track, belies their attention to detail and knack for appealing melodies. Polite and affable in the way that indie pop often is, the Zephyr Bones may not demand your attention, though their strong songwriting and production certainly deserves it. ~ Timothy Monger
