Webster was enamored with his former employer Duke Ellington, and appropriately opens this 1965 date with Elligton's old warhorse "Perdido." What follows is a consistently topnotch set of tunes that highlights not just "The Frog," as his intimates called him, but also pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Nils-Henning Orsted Pederson, and drummer Alex Riel. Webster himself really shines on the uptempo burner "Indiana" and his old standby tune "Sunday" (a song that he recorded often).
However, it is always Webster's ballad work that displays his true brilliance for the saxophone and for jazz. Readings of "Yesterdays" and "Over the Rainbow" prove this point irrefutably. Webster's smoky tone and lucid phrasing is as inimitable as it is beautiful. In other words, Webster's ability to bring deep meaning to a melody is a talent that few of his contemporaries--perhaps none of them--can outdo.
