空間を漂うギター、歌うようにメロディーを奏でるベース、シンプルかつタイトなドラム---サザン・ロックとポスト・パンクを掛け合わせたようなサウンドにソウルフルなヴォーカルが加わって、唯一無二の不思議な個性が生まれる。ナッシュヴィル出身の4人組は、いまやU2、パール・ジャムに迫る存在だ。人気と評価は申し分ない。実験的であることとトラディショナルであることが矛盾しない音楽性はこの5作目でも変わらないが、テンポを落としていつも以上に歌の力を追求した印象を受ける。変化よりも深化をめざした本作は過去最高の全米2位を記録。これまでにないほど打ち出したレイドバック感覚が心地良く、バンドの南部魂に改めて触れた気がした。あと必要なのはキャリアの長さだけ？
