This albums collects the recordings Franklin made as a teenager for Columbia Records in the early 1960s. Originally, these songs were recorded for as singles for jukeboxes, and the record company was pushing her in a blues-tinged pop/jazz direction. This is not the Aretha of "Respect" or "Hey Now Hey"--but it's a glimpse of a fine, unique singer early in her career. She sounds, at times, like the soul/R&B-side of Dinah Washington with touches of Nina Simone and Patsy Cline (listen to the twang in her voice on "Love Is the Only Thing").
The band on these songs consists of jazz players like Milt Hinton, Ray Bryant and Al Sears-- and the feel here acccentuates the bluesy side of these musicians. If you're looking for southern gospel-inspired soul shouts, you won't find them here. But if you want to hear some very fine singing by one of the best American singers ever (especially at a budget price), FIRST 12 SIDES is worth your investment.
