Personnel: Guy Lombardo (vocals, violin); Larry Owen, Fred Higman, Kenny Gardner, Skip Nelson, Carmen Lombardo (vocals). Though you couldn't tell it by examining the album cover or the brief liner notes, this import CD contains 22 tracks by Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians that originally were released on Decca Records between 1939 and 1944. The compilation for the most part eschews Lombardo's hit recordings of the period -- only "Deep Purple," "Take It Easy," and the #1 "It's Love Love Love" were chart items -- in favor of obscure B-sides and cover versions of hits by others, such as "Three Little Fishes" (Kay Kyser) and "Scatterbrain" (Frankie Masters). (Note that "Goodnight Sweetheart" is not the hit version from 1931, but a re-recording.) As such, while a welcome release for fans who don't generally see such tracks on reissues, this album is not the best place for new listeners to start a Lombardo collection. ~ William Ruhlmann
