Seely released two remarkably Stereolab-like albums in the mid-'90s, but the Atlanta-based quartet changed its approach quite a bit for WINTER BIRDS. There's a few Stereolabesque drones, and the wispy harmonies of guitarist Lori Scacco and bassist Joy Waters still recall those of Laetitia Sadier and Mary Hansen, but where the earlier records had a certain tribute-band quality, these songs are considerably more wide-ranging. That's not to say you can't play Spot the Similarity with WINTER BIRDS--you might recognize Tortoise, Amp, Mouse On Mars, Pram and a touch of My Bloody Valentine--but that's because Seely is working approximately the same patch of ground: male and female voices often buried in the mix, atmospheric keyboards sometimes glacial and sometimes lulling, guitars that alternately chime and drone. As the man said, if you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like.
