This Boston quartet started out as an aggressive metal band, and over the course of a number of indie albums, gradually refined their sound by introducing more complex musical elements. By the time of their national breakout with major-label debut ANTENNA, their approach had become a combination of aggro-rock, emo, and somewhat Radiohead-like modern alt/prog-rock full of spacey atmosphere and sonic drama. While the stately, textured sound that's a key element of the production is impressive, it's equally interesting to see how Cave In have honed their sound to the point where they're capable of mixing catchy, concise hard-rock nuggets in among the spacier jaunts. There's little on ANTENNA that would sound out of place on a contemporary heavy rock radio station, yet there are enough other elements at work to set Cave In a step or two apart from the pack.
