The album is all strong country narrations--Brody penned most of the songs himself--that run the gamut from the sly backwoods wit of "Dirt Road Scholar," which finds the narrator boasting of his graduation from the "poison ivy league" to a sorority girl, to deeply affecting, war-related balladry such as the haunting "Brothers," a tribute to the sacrifices soldiers make for their families. In spite of the heavy subject matter, the latter became Brody's break-out hit.
