ロッシーニ最後のグランド・オペラの大傑作、パッパーノが2010年秋、ローマで大成功した演奏会形式公演からのライヴ録音。ロッシーニの完成させた最後のフランス・グランド・オペラ・スタイルの『ウィリアム・テル(ギヨーム・テル)』は、決定版のクリティカル・エディションで、パッパーノ、サンタ・チェチーリアの合唱団&管弦楽団、世界的なスター・キャストにより命がふきこまれました。ライヴ・コンサート・スタイルの演奏会での録音は、タイトル・ロールのカナダ出身のバリトン、ジェラルド・フィンリーと、この録音のためにパッパーノが見出したアメリカ出身のテナー、ジョン・オズボーンによるアルノールがリードしました。アルノール役は名にし負う高域が要求される至難の役で、「ジョン・オズボーンを配役できたのは幸運だった。」とパッパーノもコメントし、二人の歌手はライヴ評でも絶賛されました。その序曲は世界中で知られるものの、全体像を聴く機会が少ないこの作品は、後のベッリーニ、ドニゼッティ、ヴェルディなどに影響を与えた傑作でありながら、その実演のむずかしさを証明しているかも知れません。パッパーノの演奏は、シャイー盤やムーティ盤に肉薄する名演として、世界的に高い評価を得ているアルバムです。このアルバムが「ホーム・オヴ・オペラ」シリーズで待望の再発売となります。なおブックレットは簡単な解説とあらすじ(欧文のみ)となり、歌詞・対訳は付いておりません。
