Contains an untitled hidden track following "Lost In Autumn". The Sea And Cake: Sam Prekop (vocals, guitar); Archer Prewitt (guitar); Eric Claridge (bass); John McEntire (drums). Additional personnel includes: Casey Rice (guitar); Brad Wood (saxophone, organ, marimba, drums, percussion). Recorded at Idful Music Studio, Chicago, Ilinois in September 1993. THE SEA AND CAKE is the debut from Chicagoan Sam Prekop's pioneering post-rock band. Prekop previously led Shrimp Boat and has since released a solo album. This quartet includes Coctails member Archer Prewitt on guitar and keyboards and Tortoise's John McEntire on drums and keyboards. The Sea and Cake's quietly propulsive songs are at once melodic and hypnotic, the arrangements spare, but the band is not to be dismissed as minimalist. Very real tensions tie the vocals with the interlocking guitars. The album has a DIY feel, but The Sea and Cake is far removed from the garage or lo-fi band/production aesthetic. A song such as "Flat Lay The Water" is compellingly poetic, its chiming guitars and elusive lyrics darting in and out of the music like fishes. This auspicious debut record paved the way for several rapidly released and equally fine follow-up albums, including NASSAU and THE BIZ.

商品の紹介

Spin (2/95, p.79) - Highly Recommended - "...The first cute-rock supergroup....The result is strutting pop that grooves lightly across...Afropoppy riffing..." Q (5/01, p.73) - "...A nimble alloy of pop, blue-eyed soul, Krautrock, prog and jazz..." Alternative Press (3/95, p.64) - "...[The Sea And Cake] create a mellow yet iconoclastic pop from a soulful, seemingly shapeless, seamless orb of guitars, drums and bass....this is one of those delightful recordings that you'll always be in the mood to hear....Undeniable..." Option (11-12/94, p.143) - "...Guitarist/singer...Sam Prekop...still sounds like he just stumbled out of bed, martini in hand, mumbling sleepy sweet nothings..."

The Sea and Cake's buoyant debut is a breath of fresh air, an utterly distinctive and innovative work that expands the scope of frontman Sam Prekop's work in the great Shrimp Boat to incorporate a new fascination with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and textures. Recorded by Brad Wood, the album simply glows -- Prekop's dry vocals and free-associative lyrics skip along a shimmering and lushly pastoral backdrop that nimbly fuses pop, soul, jazz, and even prog rock; tracks like "Jacking the Ball," "Flat Lay the Water," and "Showboat Angel" are as seductive as they are elusive. ~ Jason Ankeny
