With the punk revolution in full swing in the U.K. and the U.S., the Diodes burst onto the Canadian scene and were quickly signed to Columbia's Canadian operation. While the sound of the band is very much of a sort with contemporaries like the Clash or the Ramones, the lyrical content is another thing altogether, eschewing the political and the nasty for a more poetic style (it's hard to imagine the Ramones covering a Paul Simon song). Despite the requisite hard guitars, The Diodes also sports a really melodic bent throughout the album, presaging new wave rather than just rehashing the standard punk rock tricks. If Canadians weren't listening, the rest of the world was -- copies of the album made their way to both England and America, and the band wound up opening for some of the biggest names in the punk world shortly after that. Twenty years after the album's initial release, it was finally paired up with the band's second album on the Tired of Waking Up Tired CD. ~ Sean Carruthers
