Have you ever wanted to travel back in time and see how an artist got his start? You can with James Taylor's first taste of success, JAMES TAYLOR & THE ORIGINAL FLYING MACHINE 1967. This is a unique collection of demos and incomplete versions of early songs by Taylor's first group, recorded at the start of his long and prosperous career. Teaming with his boyhood friend Danny Kortchmar and singing lead is a young Taylor who sounds very little like the artist we've come to know. Instead, this is a very "San Francisco Summer Of Love"-sounding collection that is reflective of the time it was recorded. Still, there are glimmers of Taylor's future style as in the gently sung "Brighten Your Night With My Day" and parts of the psychedelic demo "Kootch's Song." An obvious Motown influence is evident in the funky "Night Owl" and "Knocking 'Round the Zoo." New versions of these two tracks are included for a look at a more polished performer a little further down the line. This disc is a treat for any James Taylor fan.

商品の紹介

Original Flying Machine 1967 is comprised of recordings James Taylor with his band the Flying Machine made a year before he signed to Apple Records. At this stage, Taylor was still trying to find his voice, yet that is the very reason why these recordings are of interest to fans. Most of the material on Original Flying Machine 1967 re-appeared on Taylors eponymous debut album for Apple, while these originals stayed in the can. These arrangements are a bit more full-bodied, featuring the support of a full band, led by guitarist Danny Kortchmar. Though these are a bit more fleshed out, they arent quite as strong as the later versions. Nevertheless, the album makes for a fascinating one-time listen for most fans. (The 1996 CD reissue features six of the original albums seven songs, adding the unreleased "Kootchs Song" as the seventh song.) ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
