Have you ever wanted to travel back in time and see how an artist got his start? You can with James Taylor's first taste of success, JAMES TAYLOR & THE ORIGINAL FLYING MACHINE 1967. This is a unique collection of demos and incomplete versions of early songs by Taylor's first group, recorded at the start of his long and prosperous career. Teaming with his boyhood friend Danny Kortchmar and singing lead is a young Taylor who sounds very little like the artist we've come to know.
Instead, this is a very "San Francisco Summer Of Love"-sounding collection that is reflective of the time it was recorded. Still, there are glimmers of Taylor's future style as in the gently sung "Brighten Your Night With My Day" and parts of the psychedelic demo "Kootch's Song." An obvious Motown influence is evident in the funky "Night Owl" and "Knocking 'Round the Zoo." New versions of these two tracks are included for a look at a more polished performer a little further down the line. This disc is a treat for any James Taylor fan.
