Austin, Texas's purveyors of crazed rock & roll return with another fine set of psychedelic sludge and absurdity. While not as dark and mysterious as earlier efforts, PIOUGHD nonetheless retains the weirdness that later Butthole Surfers albums lack. The last album before they went "mainstream," (if indeed such a term is applicable), here the band prove again that to them nothing is sacred.
They spoof the Beatles with "Revolution Part 1" and "Revolution Part 2," which utilize tape loops, found sounds, and a slightly disturbing "Gary Shandling" mantra. The Surfers also hilariously slaughter Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" and mock the Jesus And Mary Chain in "P.S.Y." Also, "No, I'm Iron Man" poses an almost oedipal challenge to the Surfers' rock predecessors. The album is punctuated by the returning motif of "Lonesome Bulldog," parts I through IV, a clip clopping organ-drenched country number. Of course, no Butthole Surfers experience is complete without some reference to visceral obsession, provided here by "Golden Showers."
