Duane Eddy signed with Paul Anka's production company Camy in 1962, just after he extricated himself from his early deal with fellow Phoenix maverick Lee Hazlewood. Camy licensed Eddy's singles to RCA starting with "(Dance with the) Guitar Man," and RCA would issue Eddy's 45s until the deal expired in 1965. Real Gone Music's 2017 compilation Guitar Star: The Complete RCA Singles A's & B's collects the As and Bs of the 11 singles from these three years. By definition, this isn't a complete career overview. Jamie released Eddy's biggest hits between 1958 and 1960, so "Moovin' and Groovin'," "Rebel Rouser," "Forty Miles of Bad Road," and "Because They're Young" are all absent. That turns out to be a benefit for Guitar Star, since its focus on the swinging and surfing early '60s shows how Eddy's deep twang could be more versatile than it seems. Some of that versatility can be attributed to Hazlewood, who patched things up with Eddy not long after the RCA deal went into effect. The producer helps guide the guitarist through attempts at surf ("Your Baby's Gone Surfin'," "Water Skiing"), Western movie pastiche ("The Ballad of Paladin," "The Wild Westerners"), mellow blues ("Stretchin' Out"), acoustic ramblings ("Joshin'"), knock-offs of the Telstars ("Moon Shot") and Link Wray ("The Iguana), and sticky crossover adult pop ("The Story of Three Loves," "Theme from 'A Summer Place'"). Apart from "(Dance with The) Guitar Man" and "Boss Guitar," none of these were the hits they were so desperately trying to be, but that thirst to cash in on trends is why this is a fun period piece. It plays like an alternative parade from an American '60s that had no idea who the Beatles were. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
