Personnel: Eddie Garcia (guitar). 1970s Film Stock is the solo project of North Carolina's Eddie Garcia, who conveys a wide array of moods and atmospheres with just a guitar and an untold number of pedals. This ranges from more chiming, melodic, and optimistic-sounding pieces such as "Birds" to harder-edged note-bending skronkers like "Sling for Skeletons," which almost sounds like a rough recording of Henry Kaiser jamming with a member of Explosions in the Sky. "In View" is calmer and a bit closer to a Robert Fripp solo soundscape, but there's an extra layer of sooty distortion blocking the view of the stars. "Walk Away" feels like a sort of breakup anthem, with a slightly unsteady loop and a series of melancholy melodies letting all those messy emotions flow out. Perhaps best of all is the ten-minute epic "Victory Repeating," which resembles Justin Walter running his EVI through a mess of evil-sounding distortion -- except, of course, that it's guitar-based. A great album from a highly inventive, exciting musician. ~ Paul Simpson
