Tony Bennett's collaborations with the Count Basie band are much loved and well documented, but the performances on this disc seem to have fallen through the historical cracks. It's difficult to determine the source of this recording, as there's absolutely no information offered. The thin sound seems to suggest a radio transcription, but there's no way to be certain. What's for certain is that, despite the sub-par sound quality and paucity of annotation, these tracks are up to the stellar standard of Bennett and Basie's more well-known releases. From an eager take on "Anything Goes" and a jubilant, light-hearted "Are You Havin' Any Fun?" to the poignant, bittersweet "Growing Pains" this is a swinging affair of the first order. If you want superb fidelity, look elsewhere, but performance-wise, this disc won't disappoint.
