"After all, who could be hipper than Dion?" With these words, no less a hipster than Lou Reed inducted Dion DiMucci from the Bronx into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989. Dion has been making records steadily for 40 years. This three-CD compilation set is a fitting tribute to one of rock's greatest, most recognizable voices.
The dulcet sounds of his early doo-wop recordings with the Belmonts ("I Wonder Why," "A Teenager in Love") give way to the vulnerable, swinging swagger of his solo efforts such as "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer," and a return to his bluesy roots with "Ruby Baby" and "Spoonful." Dion reemerged on the other side of the British Invasion re-made into a folk-ish, somewhat psychedelic singer-songwriter with his last Top 10 hit, the wistful "Abraham, Martin, and John," even taking a crack at Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" during this period. The story comes full circle with the selections taken from his endearing 2000 release DEJA NU. KING OF THE NEW YORK STREETS will be of interest both to longtime fans of this seminal artist and the casual, curious listener.
