This fascinating double-disc compilation sheds light on the revolutionary sounds produced throughout Latin America during the '70s and '80s. All 14 pieces are radically different from each other, but they all share a spirit of boundless experimentation and resistance to cultural norms. A few of these artists transform elements of familiar Latin musical traditions: Banda Dispersa de la Madre Selva's piece is a sort of lush, ethereal tango played by a large ensemble, and Miguel Flores' "Pachacuti" is a 12-minute solo guitar free-folk odyssey incorporating elements of flamenco and other styles. Other pieces are by improvisational groups, and they range from bands like Amauta and Decibel, who share sensibilities with the Rock in Opposition movement, to the dark psychedelia of Musikautomatika. Brazil is represented by Grupo Um, whose "Mobile/Stabile" is a mind-blowing electro-acoustic jazz freakout. On the dark electronic end of the spectrum, there's Quum, whose creeping, sinister piece resembles early Throbbing Gristle, and Via Lactea, whose 1977 piece "Necronomicon" starts out by foreshadowing the beat-heavy industrial sounds that Wax Trax! would be pumping out a decade later. Miguel Noya's "Gran Sabana" is an astounding proto-techno track combining Klaus Schulze-like cosmic synth arpeggios with hypnotic, teasing drum programming. Breaking from the time frame specified by the album's title, there's also a 2006 recording by the late Mexican sound artist Jorge Reyes which pieces together everyday sounds such as rhythmic construction noises, crowing roosters, and flowing water. ~ Paul Simpson
