20世紀イギリスの大チェリスト、ウィリアム・プリースの高弟であり、Paladinoのオーナーとしても大活躍しているオーストリアの名チェリスト、マルティン・ルンメル。教育者としても活動しつつ、チェロのためのエチュードを多数出版・録音しており、チェロ学習者のみならず、一般のリスナーにもそれらの音楽的魅力を伝えています。

1805年にドイツ・ハンブルクで生まれたチェリスト、セバスチャン・リー(1805-1887)の生涯についてはあまり知られていませんが、この録音で聴くことのできる2つのエチュード集は、世界中のチェロ・レッスンで標準的なレパートリーとなっている作品です。リーは長らくパリ音楽院の標準的なメソッドとなっていたOp.30をはじめ、Op.31、57、70、76、92、106、109、113、131など、さまざまな難易度のエチュード集を何年にもわたって書き続けました。本アルバムに収録されたOp.70は若いチェリストのレパートリーとして最もよく知られているもので、完全にファーストポジションで演奏することができる上声は生徒用、下声は先生用となっています。Op.31は旋律的・段階的な練習曲となっており、技術的な要求が曲集の中で急激に上昇してゆくのが特徴です。どちらの作品もメロディが素晴らしく(合わせて80曲!)、聴いて楽しむことができるエチュードです。
