"Let's go tripping!" Magnetix guitarist and vocalist Looch Vibrato (aka Stephane Loustalot) bellows as he kicks off this live set, recorded during one of the French duo's infrequent visits to the United States. If what follows doesn't sound much like surf music, Live in San Francisco does sound like these two know how to hang ten, and for 33 minutes this band holds on tight and doesn't let go for a moment. Cranking out a potent combination of garage punk, noisy pop, and inspired noise, Magnetix are a bit short on memorable tunes, but on Live in San Francisco, the force and fury of Vibrato's six-string attack more than compensate, generating enough buzzy, reverb-soaked, and bass-tweaked energy to make the Arc de Triomphe get up and boogie. The rock-solid drumming from Aggy Sonora (aka Agnes Lestorte) is a fine match for Vibrato's guitar work, holding down a muscular backbeat while adding enough sonic chaos of her own to give their sound plenty of aural personality. Vibrato goes back and forth between English and his native French during the course of the set, but the mood and perceived meaning are consistent throughout, and Magnetix kicks out these jams in the universal language of an amp turned up to 10. Though not the definitive presentation of Magnetix, Live in San Francisco still captures them sounding raw and supremely attitudinal, and this no-frills album does right by one of France's most ferocious acts. ~ Mark Deming
