どれもメロディアスな名曲で、「ロックの名盤」という言葉を不動のものにしている、デビュー作にし唯一のオリジナル作。たった1枚しかオリジナルアルバムをリリースしていないのに、音楽ファンの心に深く刻み込まれたバンドはそうそういないだろう。完璧主義者であるが故に、メンバーが納得いかないまま発売されたという逸話もあり。「あのレコードを気に入ってる人も、俺たちの本当に満足行くものが出たときには驚くと思う」と語った、リー・メイヴァースが満足する音でなくとも、英国ロックの本質にして良質な部分が、ここにある。 (C)廣川奏
