Recording information: Metropolitan Studios. The first Veldt recording in two decades picks up where Daniel and Danny Chavis' previous band, Apollo Heights, left off. Titled in reference to e.e. cummings and inaudible inspiration Drake, this half-hour EP is a fluid continuation that involves fellow AH bassist and drum programmer Hayato Nakao, and contributions from guitarist Andrew Prinz (Mahogany) and vocalist Marie Cochrane. Simply and effectively, the Chavis brothers update their tried and true approach, with Daniel's emotive vocals -- his falsetto as penetrating as ever -- nearly obscured by layers of wailing guitars and heavier, mostly programmed rhythms that thud and rattle. Rudy Tambala of kindred spirits A.R. Kane produced the final track, one that taps into his band's dubbed-out dream-pop bliss. Throughout, the Veldt sound as fresh in 2016 as they did in 1992. They would fit perfectly on an eclectic live bill between Bilal and one of the Tri Angle label's mutant hip-hop producers. ~ Andy Kellman
