Chicago area metal maniacs Evil Beaver have nerve enough to not only launch an assault on gender politics, but on conventional rock formulas as well. This all-female two-piece makes music that sounds closest to a blend of early-'90s angst and late-'90s "nu-metal." Don't open the record expecting to hear those "girl group" staples like harmonies or pop sensibilities -- this music is rawk, in its most glorified and powerful form. Though the lineup is female, this band sounds closest to the rock & roll fun of male acts like Monster Magnet or Corrosion of Conformity, as Evie Evil's trademark howl and down-tuned guitar fury are perfectly complemented by drummer Laura Ann Beaver's manic she-devil style. A wickedly fun ride of heavy metal riffs, Lick It! is revenge beaver-style for the masculine posturing most metal bands indulge in. ~ Ari Wiznitzer|
